Soul food is truly the key to my heart. (Except for indian food). But yes, it was a cold rainy day, and I had walked across town just to get to this destination in fear that I was about to get robbed. But, sure enough, my friend and I made it safely. I was craving fried chicken, so we ordered the fried chicken with two sides. So the actual entree was just okay. How can you mess up fried chicken? It was good, and the sides - mac'n cheese, and collard greens were good too. But what really made this a four star rating was the peach cobbler. Oh mama, the first bite made my eyes shut and i imagined as if i was swimming in a sweet and peaceful bath. Perhaps, this is too abstract for some people. But hey- I'm this passionate about the peach cobbler! Haha, I ordered it with some coffee, and boy did i want seconds and thirds and fourths.. But I stopped myself. It is dolloped with whipped cream, and the cobbler is sweet, cinnamon-y, and soft with a little bit of a crunch. The peach is sweet, but when I mean sweet, I mean in a delicate way with a slight tender bite to it. My friend started looking at me as if I was crazy because I didn't even leave any for him when he came back from the bathroom. Didn't even get to take a picture. Hope this description does the trick. Get the peach cobbler!!!! Hopefully you will have the same experience as me!
Several friends and I make the trip to Je's for delicious soul food a couple times a year, so we were in a panic when we heard the owners were going to retire. Thankfully, the business seems to be in good hands and both the staff and menu are as good as ever! On a cold and rainy day our group was warmly greeted and, despite the lunch rush, we were seated right away. Drinks and warm corn bread soon appeared as we looked over our options. I ordered the Chopped BBQ Chicken, which was smoky, sweet, and completely delicious! My sides of Black Eyed Peas and Mashed Potatoes were definitely made with love by experienced hands. Good food, friendly and helpful staff, and a classic atmosphere that says 'you're in for some great soul food.' We all left with full tummies and big smiles, although we were so stuffed the walk home wasn't nearly as quick as the one there!
Try the Banana Pudding. Honestly, this may be the best thing I have eaten. Like ever. I ordered the cobbler to go and they gave me this instead. Wasn't paying much attention so I put a spoon ful in my mouth expecting peaches and I had creamy banana goodness. It was a surprise but SO GOOD. Get the Banana Pudding. Do it.
This is not health food. If you're a vegetarian, do not come here. BUT, if you're into stuff that's fried and delicious, Je's is the place for you. It's an oasis in a part of Newark that mostly features restaurants that make you want to call the health department when you walk in. Not Je's, though. It's great food, great service, a clean environment, and won't bust your wallet - most meals are around $10, and make sure you get the cobbler for dessert; that'll set you back another $2 or so. Soups are also great. Actually, everything's great. Just come here. I promise, you'll leave stuffed and happy.
My friends and I made a trip to Newark, NJ yesterday for the Devils game but we wanted to have an early dinner first. It was my job to find a restaurant.... thanks to Yelp I stumbled upon Je's. We decided to try it since southern soul food is always a good idea. It was hard to find parking because the restaurant is located on a small street... but we decided to park in a $5 lot half a block away... We were very happy that Je's and the Prudential Center were only a few blocks apart. We were able to get a table right when we walked in (5:15 on a Friday night). I ordered the smothered/fried pork chops with mac n cheese and okra. The portions are huge! They gave me 2 pork chops! My boyfriend ordered the fried catfish with mac n cheese and our friend ordered the fried chicken with collard greens and mac n cheese. Everything was delicious! We could not stop saying how great the food was! The reason I did not give this place 5 stars was because when I asked for a refill of iced tea I got their special lemonade/iced tea mix. A nice treat but not what I was expecting. My friend had said that he did not want any more wine but was brought and charged for another glass. The service was great! I believe they only have two waitresses... and you can see that if the place fills up they will be busy and hard to get ahold of... but she did a great job. We will definitely be back to Je's next time we are in Jersey!
If we ever go back to the neighborhood we lived in for 3 months, where my S.O.'s beloved car was stolen twice, it would be to eat here again. There are a few tiny tables for 2, some seats at the counter, but it's primarily long, communal tables which you will probably share with some families. Moist but not overly sweet or cakey corn bread, light and delicate cornmeal fried fish, collards (not too salty, sweet, sticky, or fatty), all served with perfect iced tea, sweet or unsweet. Incredible ribs, mac and cheese, and anything else they served (we cleaned our plates each time). I agree with the other posters who recommended coming before church services let out--it gets packed inside and there will be a wait. I believe we went there at least 6x that summer. The table service is efficient (peruse the menu quickly and please don't make the lady wait), and you pay at the counter, or if you have more time and don't mind the people waiting for your spot, sit longer and the server will pick up the bill when she can. I really miss this place. Yes, we didn't look like anyone else there, but it didn't matter to the staff or the other patrons. The food was incredible, the service pleasant, the prices more than reasonable.
I automatically give 5 stars to any restaurant with Macaroni & Cheese listed under "Vegetables." The Barbecue Ribs, slathered with homemade sauce, just fell off the bone. The collard greens and yams were smacktacular. The cornbread was merely an avenue for soaking up more BBQ sauce. All that for 9 bucks. Phenomenal. This place couldn't be more Newark-y if Queen Latifah were here in the flesh (and apparently she does eat here when visiting her home town). Nice folks, soul food, and rrrl cheap. You gotta go.
